Montana Man Sentenced for Campground Murder

A man linked to white supremacist groups has received a sentence for the violent murder of another man at a campground in Montana, an incident that was initially thought to be a bear attack.

Darren Christopher Abbey was found guilty by a jury for fatally stabbing Dustin Jelsem. The attack involved an ax, a piece of wood, and a screwdriver, occurring after Abbey met Jelsem at his campsite near Big Sky, Montana, in October 2024. Investigators traced Abbey to the crime scene through DNA evidence discovered on a beer can inside Jelsem’s tent. Initially, Abbey claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that Jelsem had attacked him first.

Authorities pointed out discrepancies in Abbey’s story, particularly noting the several wounds Jelsem had suffered during the ordeal. Jelsem’s girlfriend and a friend found his body and initially speculated that he might have been the victim of a bear attack. However, wildlife officers later dismissed this theory, finding no evidence of a bear in the vicinity.

Abbey subsequently confessed to stealing Jelsem’s cooler, gun, and cell phone, as well as hiding evidence post-murder.

After a six-day trial, Abbey was convicted of intentional homicide and tampering with evidence. He opted not to testify during the proceedings. While the crime could carry a death penalty in Montana, prosecutors decided not to pursue that option. Abbey’s attorney stated that her client would consider appealing the verdict, with the final decision expected after the formal ruling on December 30.

This case has presented significant challenges, particularly as there were no witnesses and occurred in such a remote area, making an affirmative defense difficult, according to Abbey’s attorney.

Abbey has been associated with a white supremacist group, and records from the state Department of Corrections revealed he bore tattoos of a swastika and an iron cross.
