Man accused of damaging and slashing the tires of 11 police cars in a Lexus caught and quickly released in court

A man from Long Island was arrested after allegedly vandalizing over a dozen police cars parked outside the new station of the New York City Police Department. This incident occurred shortly before he was taken into custody, reportedly after nearly tailgating a police officer. Authorities indicated he was released soon after appearing in court.

According to reports, Christian Genwright, a 22-year-old from Valley Stream, is connected to damaging five marked and six unmarked NYPD cars near the 116th Precinct headquarters in Rosedale on Monday night around 11:20 p.m. Following the damage, he allegedly drove off in a luxury car.

Details suggest he used a knife to slash the tires of seven vehicles and broke the windshields of four others with a hammer, which also resulted in one airbag deploying and the driver’s side mirror being harmed.

Later, police stated that Genwright was located on 244th Street around 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday. An observant officer spotted his silver Lexus and attempted to stop it, but Genwright reportedly reversed and nearly collided with the police cruiser.

As a result, he was arrested and faced charges that included reckless endangerment, 14 counts of criminal mischief, resisting arrest, and two counts related to weapon possession. On Wednesday night, he faced an additional ten counts of criminal mischief as per the criminal complaint.

The Queens District Attorney’s Office noted that due to the nature of the charges, they were not bail-eligible under state law, leading to Genwright being released under the supervision of Judge Jennifer Tubridy.

Interestingly, this isn’t Genwright’s first offense; he has been arrested six times previously. His most recent prior arrest was on February 7, where he allegedly broke traffic laws, fled from police, and acted aggressively towards the officers.

His next court appearance in this case is scheduled for January 21, according to prosecutors.

The 116th Precinct Station Building, which cost around $105 million, opened in December 2024. It is the first completely new NYPD command center established in over ten years, with the previous one being inaugurated in 2013.

Officers stationed at the 116th Precinct patrol neighborhoods including Rosedale, Springfield Gardens, Brookville, and Laurelton.
