Ukrainian President Open to Discussing Trump’s Peace Proposal
Even with some backlash from European leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy seems willing to talk about President Donald Trump’s new peace initiative. According to the Trump administration, this proposal suggests Ukraine would need to relinquish part of its territory in return for U.S. security guarantees aimed at deterring future Russian threats. Many European leaders view this as a significant concession to Russia.
However, Zelenskiy hasn’t dismissed the idea outright. In a conversation with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll on Thursday, he indicated a readiness to negotiate. He shared this sentiment with Axios, mentioning that the discussions focused on “options to achieve true peace.”
Zelenskiy’s office conveyed to Axios that there was a mutual agreement to explore the proposal’s provisions in a way that would effectively end the war. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff reached out to both Europe and Ukraine to reassure them that the plan was flexible and their concerns would be considered.
Witkoff emphasized this during a call with German Foreign Minister Johann Vardepur, suggesting that if there were parts of the plan that were unappealing, they should be communicated for possible adjustments.
Meanwhile, Zelenskiy is facing challenges back home as he deals with a corruption investigation that poses a threat to his leadership. Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Service has launched measures against individuals linked to Zelenskiy, accusing them of embezzling substantial funds from a nuclear energy company.
At present, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not provided comments on these developments.
