Court Sentences Former Philippine Mayor for Human Trafficking
A Philippine court has sentenced Alice Guo, a former mayor of Bambang, to life in prison for her involvement in human trafficking. Authorities later identified her as Chinese national Guo Huaping, linked to a fraudulent operation that profited significantly from complex land holdings.
This decision comes after a significant police raid in 2024 revealed hundreds of trafficked workers at the Bang Bang complex. This incident led to a Senate inquiry that scrutinized Guo’s background and her possible connections to a Chinese criminal syndicate. The court ordered the seizure of the facility and handed life sentences to seven co-defendants, as reported by government authorities.
The Presidential Organized Crime Commission expressed that this verdict is a pivotal legal and moral victory, emphasizing its importance not just for the victims but also as a reaffirmation of the government’s firm stance against organized crime.
Guo, who presented herself as a Filipino citizen, denied any criminal affiliations and maintained that she was a legitimate citizen. The investigation intensified following the raid, and after refusing to attend a subsequent Senate hearing, she fled the Philippines. Eventually, she was apprehended in Indonesia and deported in September 2024. Her final dismissal from office was officially noted last month for gross misconduct.
Reports indicate that the operation linked to Guo was part of a broader increase in fraudulent centers throughout Southeast Asia, where many foreign workers have fallen victim to trafficking. The rising controversy surrounding these operations has triggered calls for more stringent regulations on offshore gaming firms in the Philippines, primarily run by Chinese nationals serving customers in China. In response, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has imposed a ban on the industry.
Guo also faces additional legal challenges regarding corruption and money laundering, although her attorney has not provided any immediate comments following the recent ruling.
