Colombian President Challenges U.S. Government

On Sunday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro released a video where he boldly challenged Secretary of State Marco Rubio, suggesting that his government is akin to “a jaguar about to wake up,” an apparent warning to the United States.

This remark seems to be a reaction to former President Donald Trump’s personal sanctions against him, tied to what critics say is Colombia’s inadequate handling of drug trafficking issues. The United Nations has confirmed that Colombia is the leading cocaine producer globally, and the situation has worsened under Petro’s administration.

Argentine news outlet Infobae reported that during a political speech on Friday, Petro aimed pointed criticism at the U.S. government, highlighting the notable surge in drug trade during his tenure. He took to Twitter, asserting, “This is not an order for Colombia to kneel. Free Colombia is beautiful and free.”

In his speech, Petro’s ire was directed at Secretary Rubio, who has often been targeted by Latin American leftists. Petro provocatively suggested that Rubio might be motivated to arrest him directly, saying, “If you’re going to arrest me, let’s see if we can do it.” He added, “This people will not kneel.”

Addressing the U.S. government more generally, he further stated, “We have to take a knee, because there’s a jaguar here that’s about to wake up. Don’t intimidate us, don’t fool us; we know the play.”

Petro reflected on Colombia’s turbulent history, saying, “For two centuries, these people went from war to war. Sometimes, these conflicts arose without cause.” Colombia has faced decades of violence, largely due to domestic guerrilla groups, with Petro having ties to a Marxist guerrilla movement in his past.

Since being elected president in 2022, Petro has consistently opposed the U.S. government, particularly since Trump returned to office. Tensions hit a new high during the United Nations General Assembly in September when Petro joined pro-Hamas protests and criticized the U.S. military’s adherence to Trump.

At that time, he stated, “From here in New York, I ask all members of the United States military not to point their guns at humanity. We will not obey President Trump’s orders.”

The relationship soured further when the U.S. revoked Petro’s visa amid growing tensions. Following this, the Treasury Department announced sanctions against him and some of his family members due to alleged connections with drug trafficking.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remarked that cocaine production had surged to high levels under Petro’s leadership, flooding the U.S. and affecting many Americans. Trump compounded the situation by labeling Petro an “illegal drug dealer” on social media, claiming that Petro was doing nothing to combat the drug trade despite significant U.S. financial aid.

Amid these accusations, Petro denied any links to drug trafficking and attempted to validate his spending to show he wasn’t involved in illegal activities. However, the report he released sparked controversy, as it revealed visits to expensive venues, including a stop at a Lisbon strip club during an official trip.

Faced with backlash over this report, Petro found himself in hot water. He remarked on social media that he didn’t seek to buy sex, asserting his ability to attract partners without resorting to such tactics. “Sexuality must always be linked to culture. That’s called eroticism,” he said.
