On Saturday, protesters opposing ICE were filmed hurling trash cans and debris at police officers near a government building in New York City, leading to multiple arrests, according to police. This confrontation unfolds during a sustained effort to address illegal immigration in Chinatown, where demonstrations have been ongoing for over a month.
Officers arrived at Center and Howard Streets, close to the U.S. General Services Administration building in lower Manhattan, around noon after reports of unruly protesters reached the NYPD.
Upon their arrival, authorities noticed individuals obstructing streets and exits at various points. Videos captured protesters pushing large potted plants toward ICE vehicles, throwing trash at law enforcement, and shouting expletives.
In addition to that, the demonstrators were seen moving trash cans and recycling bins, as well as pushing barricades against police officers. Despite officers instructing the crowd to disperse several times, they refused to comply.
While the exact number of arrests has yet to be disclosed, the NYPD confirmed that multiple individuals are now in custody.
