Nick Folk fulfilled his Rex Ryan nickname with a game-winning kick for the Jets

Folk Hero Returns

Rex Ryan is probably smiling somewhere up there.

It was a reunion of sorts this Sunday, as Nick Folk returned to the Jets and showcased his skills after being nicknamed “Folk” by Ryan years ago. In a thrilling match, he kicked the game-winning field goal that secured a 27-24 victory against Atlanta.

“Playing in front of the fans and contributing to a win—there’s just nothing like it,” Folk remarked. “I feel like everyone has their role on a Sunday. I’m just happy to be a part of it.” It’s nice to see someone appreciate those moments.

Jets rookie head coach Aaron Glenn decided to bring Folk on board during training camp, primarily because the team’s other young kickers weren’t exactly putting anyone at ease.

“I played with Nick back in Dallas,” Glenn recalled. “We always thought he could bring stability to the kicking game.” It’s funny how connections from the past can come back around to help out.

John Simpson, a guard for the Jets, described Folk as “very reserved.” He said, “You know how the veterans are—they don’t say much. But when they do, you pay attention.” There’s wisdom in those quiet moments, I suppose.

Defensive back Quantez Stigers had a personal stake in the game, having grown up in Atlanta as a fan of the Falcons.

He mentioned that during the East-West Shrine Game, he hoped to join the Falcons but felt overlooked. “This game was definitely personal for me,” Stigers admitted. “I had it circled all year. I almost walked away from football.” It’s interesting how what seems like a setback can fuel someone’s fire.

Glenn addressed comments about wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, who led the Jets with eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown, asserting that he wasn’t just a side note in the trade for Sauce Gardner. “He was a player we sought after. I’ve known him for a long time,” Glenn explained. It’s good to see a coach recognize someone’s potential based on familiarity.

Isiah Williams had a strong moment with an 83-yard kickoff return that set up a crucial field goal, especially since the team was moving away from its primary returner, Kene Nwangwu. “It definitely pushes me to step up,” Williams said. Competition can be a great motivator.

Despite the Jets’ win, they had to contend with Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, who racked up an impressive 142 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Jets’ rush defense has shown signs of improvement recently, allowing only 98 yards against the Ravens last week. Still, they struggled with Atlanta, giving up 167 yards and two touchdowns.

The Falcons came into the game boasting a remarkable streak of five or more sacks in four consecutive matches— a record that dates back to the Eagles in 2022. They’ve been solid, ranking third in the NFL with 39 sacks.

Interestingly, the Jets managed to pressure Tyrod Taylor only twice during the game.

Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts showed his prowess, catching seven passes for 82 yards. He already had a notable track record against the Jets, catching 18 passes for 170 yards in previous encounters.

As for the Jets, they now stand at an unusual 12 consecutive games without an interception, which adds to their ongoing struggles. Jets running back Breece Hall, who had a strong outing last week, finished with 68 rushing yards and a touchdown this time around. Meanwhile, the defensive line managed to register just 19 sacks this season, with Michael Clemons and Tony Adams contributing to the total with their sacking of Kirk Cousins.
