Flags Lowered in Memory of National Guardsman

President Donald Trump has directed that American flags be flown at half-mast across the nation and U.S. territories to honor National Guardsman Sarah Beckstrom, who was tragically shot and killed near the White House on Thanksgiving Eve.

This proclamation was made by President Trump early Thursday morning, and shortly thereafter, flags on the White House grounds were lowered.

On that day, flags were to be displayed at half-staff until sunset on all public buildings, military posts, naval bases, and federal vessels across the District of Columbia and the United States.

The directive also included all U.S. embassies, consulates, and military installations abroad, ensuring the flag would fly at half-staff during the same duration.

The President emphasized that this act is “a sign of respect for the memory of Dr. Sarah Beckstrom.”

Authorities have identified Rahmanullah Rakanwal, 29, as the shooter who killed 20-year-old Beckstrom from West Virginia and 24-year-old National Guardsman Andrew Wolf on November 26, near the Farragut West subway station.

During a Cabinet meeting, President Trump remarked on Beckstrom, saying she was an outstanding individual, respected, and that it was difficult to comprehend her loss, noting her youth and potential. He shared that she cherished her parents deeply.

On another note, he mentioned Wolf, stating that he was “fighting for his life” due to severe injuries.

Rakanwal, originally from Afghanistan, entered the U.S. in September 2021 through an initiative after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. During the incident, he reportedly shouted “Allah Akbar” while using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver.

He has been charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill, and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to reports.
