European leaders discuss the US while seemingly trying to undermine Trump's peace agreement for Russia and Ukraine: Report

Efforts Towards Peace Between Russia and Ukraine

For over a year now, President Donald Trump and his administration have been actively striving to negotiate a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.

There have been moments when it seemed like an end to the violence was within reach. However, both President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Vladimir Putin have persistently introduced hurdles, primarily revolving around territorial disputes and security arrangements for Ukraine.

Yet, it appears there are other parties that prefer to derail U.S.-led peace discussions.

A recently leaked memo, which is believed to outline a phone call on Monday involving Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and several EU leaders, laid bare the skepticism and mistrust some European officials have regarding the United States’ role in peace talks.

According to a German publication, Macron expressed concerns that the U.S., which has provided Ukraine with substantial financial support, might “betray” the country. He indicated that without clarity on security matters, the U.S. could compromise Ukraine’s position regarding territorial claims, presenting a significant risk for Zelensky.

Macron, among other EU leaders, was critical of Trump’s initial 28-point peace proposal, suggesting that some of the terms would require approval from the EU. His office stated that he “did not express his feelings in these terms,” without elaborating further.

Merz remarked that they needed to be “very careful” in future discussions, noting that “they’re playing a game against both you and us.” It seems he was alluding to Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who are involved in the negotiations.

Alexander Stubb, the Finnish President, shared his concerns in a recent interview, asserting that the conditions for a fair peace may not be met. He remarked that “we can’t leave Ukraine and Zelensky alone with them,” referring once again to the U.S. delegation during a conference call.

Notes from the conversation, confirmed by several participants, showed Rutte acknowledging Stubb’s sentiments about the necessity to safeguard Zelensky.

While Zelensky’s spokesperson has opted not to comment on the specifics of the call, they did express that Ukraine is prepared for all possible scenarios and is committed to working positively with partners to secure a dignified peace, which they believe is essential for real security.

The White House did not provide any feedback regarding the situation.

On a different note, President Putin accused European nations on Tuesday of undermining peace efforts, stating that “They have no peace agenda and are on the side of war.” He also criticized those countries for imposing “demands that are absolutely unacceptable to Russia,” thus complicating the peace process.
