Trump Awards Gold Medallions to Kennedy Center Honorees

Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony

On Saturday night, President Trump honored recipients of the Kennedy Center Awards, presenting them with newly designed gold medals from Tiffany & Co. The ceremony took place in the Oval Office, just a day before the main event.

Among the recipients were notable figures like George Strait, Michael Crawford, Gloria Gaynor, Sylvester Stallone, and the rock band Kiss. It was quite a lineup!

The atmosphere was lively; as the White House press corps gathered, Gaynor’s famous hit “I Will Survive” echoed through the Rose Garden. Other familiar tracks, including Kiss’ “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” and Abba’s “The Winner Takes It All,” filled the air from speakers nearby.

In addressing the honorees, Trump said, “It’s an honor to honor the best of America’s arts and culture.” He expressed his admiration for the recipients, mentioning that he knows most of them and is a fan. “This is perhaps the most accomplished class of Kennedy Center honorees ever assembled,” he added.

The medals were presented in order to Strait, Crawford, Gaynor, Stallone, and Kiss members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss, along with Ace Frehley’s daughter, who accepted on his behalf. Trump praised the talents of each individual, referring to Strait as the “King of Country,” calling Gaynor the “first lady” of disco, and hailing Crawford as the “Phantom” of Broadway. He referred to Kiss as rock’n’roll’s “hottest band” and Stallone as one of Hollywood’s “greatest visionaries.”

The new medallion design indicates a shift from what the White House described as “the cheesy rainbow band medallion designs of the past.”

Looking ahead, President Trump announced that he would host the Kennedy Center Honors Banquet on Sunday at the State Department’s Benjamin Franklin Ballroom. He mentioned something unique about this event: the president of the United States will act as host at the request of a specific television network.
