Governor Tim Walz Responds to Fraud Allegations Amid Somalia Aid Scandal
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is facing increasing scrutiny following fraud accusations linked to a recent video. The footage features an independent journalist who revealed troubling details about the ongoing Somalia aid scandal.
A representative for Walz, a Democrat known for his frequent clashes with former President Trump, referred to a striking video released by conservative YouTuber Nick Shirley.
“The Governor has been actively working to combat fraud and has requested more power from the Legislature to implement robust measures. He has ramped up oversight, launching investigations into specific facilities, including one that has already been shut down,” the spokesperson stated.
Additionally, the spokesperson mentioned that Walz “hired an external firm to assess payments made to high-risk programs, permanently halted the Housing Stability Services program, appointed a new statewide program integrity officer, and supported criminal prosecutions.”
The 43-minute video, which premiered on Friday, features Shirley and a local Minnesotan named David visiting several child care centers purportedly owned by Somali immigrants in the Minneapolis area.
Some locations were either completely closed despite signs claiming otherwise, or were managed by employees who refused to participate in the filming.
At one site, a sign misspelled “Quality Learning Center” was displayed. This center, intended to serve at least 99 children, reportedly received around $4 million in state funding.
Shirley appeared on “The Big Weekend Show” on Fox News on Sunday, discussing his discoveries. He humorously pointed out that the supposed scam was so blatant that “even a kindergartener could tell there was something off.”
“Fraud is fraud. We all work hard for our money and shouldn’t have to tolerate this,” he remarked.
He further emphasized the demand for reform, stating that his video alone had instigated an investigation. “People want change, and we deserve to know how our taxes are being spent,” he declared.
Many officials have echoed Shirley’s sentiments, with FBI Director Kash Patel announcing an increase in personnel dedicated to investigating resources in Minnesota. He described this move as part of a larger initiative to “disrupt a significant fraud scheme that has exploited federal programs.”
Federal investigators have indicated that nearly half of the $18 billion allocated to Minnesota since 2018 might have been misappropriated, estimating potential losses of up to $9 billion.
As of Saturday evening, 86 individuals had been charged related to these fraudulent activities, with 59 already convicted. The majority of those implicated belong to Minnesota’s Somali community.
Shirley’s highly viral video had surpassed 100 million views by Sunday night.
