Trump cautions that the US will step in if Iran harms protesters during rising unrest

Trump’s Warning to Iran Amid Protests

President Donald Trump issued a warning early Friday, stating that the United States would take action if Iran continued to harm protesters. On his platform, Truth Social, he mentioned that should Iran “shoot and violently kill peaceful protesters, which is their habit,” the U.S. would step in. “We’re locked, we’re loaded, and we’re ready to go,” he added.

This warning comes as protests have erupted across Iran, driven by a struggling economy and escalating frustrations. Reports indicate at least seven individuals have died during these clashes, involving both demonstrators and members of security forces, as per various media outlets.

Some intense violence has been noted particularly in western Iran, where videos circulating online depict fires in the streets and the sounds of gunfire accompanying the nightly protests.

These protests are being described as the most significant since 2022, which saw widespread demonstrations following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. While officials state that the current protests haven’t reached the same scale as before, they have manifested in various regions with chants targeting Iran’s leaders.

President Masoud Pezeshkian, leading Iran’s civilian government, has shown some openness to dialogue with the protesters. However, amid a worsening economy—exemplified by a sharp decline in the value of the rial, which now requires around 1.4 million to buy one dollar—options for meaningful engagement appear limited.

State television reported several arrests linked to the unrest, involving individuals suspected of exploiting the situation, among them alleged monarchists and those connected to European groups. Authorities also claimed to have seized illegal weapons during related operations, although details remain scarce.

The demonstrations are also occurring during a time of heightened regional tensions. Following a 12-day conflict with Israel that included U.S. bombings of Iranian nuclear facilities, Iranian officials have indicated a halt in uranium enrichment and a willingness to engage in negotiations regarding their nuclear program in an attempt to ease sanctions.

However, discussions have yet to resume, and both President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have cautioned Iran against any efforts to rebuild its nuclear capabilities, adding further pressure to the Iranian leadership amid ongoing protests.
