Fraud consequences lead Democratic Governor Tim Walz to withdraw from Minnesota reelection race

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced on Monday that he is stepping back from his campaign for a third term amid harsh criticism regarding his management of a significant welfare fraud scandal in the state, which has drawn attention as a key issue for his failed 2024 bid for vice president.

Walz stated, “The political gamesmanship from the Republican Party is complicating our efforts.” Reflecting on his situation during the holidays with his family and team, he concluded, “I can’t do it.” He further expressed, “I must focus on safeguarding the people of Minnesota rather than my own political ambitions.”

As he declared his withdrawal from the race, Walz mentioned, “Let others handle the election. I need to concentrate on my responsibilities as governor.”

Walz’s quest for a third four-year term began last September, but he has recently been under fire from President Trump, Republicans, and some fellow Democrats regarding past allegations of grand theft in the state.

Over 90 individuals, primarily from Minnesota’s sizable Somali community, face charges in what has been labeled the largest COVID-19-era fraud scheme in the nation since 2022. Authorities are still determining the total amount taken from alleged money laundering connected to fraudulent food, housing programs, daycare centers, and Medicaid services, with estimates suggesting it may exceed $1 billion.

Prosecutors noted that several individuals who have pled guilty reportedly used the misappropriated funds to purchase luxury vehicles, property, jewelry, and travel. Some of this money might have been funneled overseas, potentially reaching the hands of Islamic extremists.

Last month, Walz accepted accountability for the situation, stating, “This is under my leadership. I’m accountable. Ultimately, I need to fix this.”

The governor has already moved to suspend payments suspected of being fraudulent and initiated an external audit of the state’s Medicaid claims.

Trump has repeatedly deemed Walz “incompetent,” even using derogatory language regarding disabilities during Thanksgiving to criticize the governor.

This scandal has seen a surge in national exposure over the last couple of months, particularly following a video from 23-year-old YouTuber Nick Shirley, which claimed extensive fraud at a daycare center run by the Somali community. Shortly after, the Trump administration halted federal childcare funding to Minnesota.
