Mamdani Responds to Fatal Shooting of Activist by ICE Agents
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has stated that the tragic death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Goode, shot by ICE agents, is a culmination of “a year of cruelty” under the Trump administration, labeling the incident as “murder.”
Mamdani contested Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem’s assertion that the actions of the federal agents were justified by their training. Instead, he criticized the aggressive presence of ICE agents deployed across the nation during Trump’s tenure.
“We can all view that video and draw our own conclusions; that ICE officer killed that woman in Minneapolis. This reflects a year characterized by brutality,” the Democratic Socialist remarked during an interview with CNN’s Caitlan Collins on Thursday night.
He expressed his belief that many New Yorkers, particularly the 3 million immigrants in the city, woke up feeling a “heightened sense of anxiety” and fear about leaving their homes.
Mamdani also conveyed his concerns to President Trump regarding ICE’s “inhumane” practices, stating, “It is apparent to me, and to many across the nation, that these ICE raids are cruel and do not enhance public safety.”
Collins pressed Mamdani on his choice of words, asking why he would call the shooting a “murder,” a term even Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has avoided in his critiques of ICE.
“That’s the conclusion I reached after watching the video, and I believe many Americans feel the same way, despite differing interpretations from others,” the mayor responded.
