Enforce the Insurrection Act, Detain Tim Walz for Threatening to Employ National Guard Against ICE

Republican Lawmakers Urge Trump to Invoke Insurrection Act Against Minnesota Governor

Republican lawmakers are urging former President Donald Trump to invoke the federal Insurrection Act to arrest Governor Tim Walz. This follows comments from Democrats who threatened to use the Minnesota National Guard to hinder the state’s immigration enforcement activities.

Representative Mary Miller (R-Ill.) emphasized, “Invoke the Insurrection Act. Please arrest Tim Walz,” in a recent post on X. Her request aligns with the growing tensions surrounding Walz’s suggestion that the National Guard could be deployed to stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from capturing undocumented immigrants in Minnesota.

Miller shared remarks made by Walz during a press conference where he stated, “I have orders to prepare the Minnesota National Guard. We have soldiers in training, ready to deploy if needed. Just to be clear, this reminder is for the public. These National Guard troops are our National Guard troops.”

This threat from the governor followed an incident in which a federal law enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, in Minneapolis after she allegedly attempted to run the officer over.

Walz expressed, “We don’t need any more help from the federal government. Donald Trump and Kristi Noem, you’ve done enough. I’ve issued a warning to prepare the Minnesota National Guard.” He pointed out that as governor, he has responsibilities for state defense, law enforcement, and protecting citizens.

Other Republicans echoed concerns, with Representative Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.) likening Walz’s statements to a call for civil war, citing historical parallels to Fort Sumter, which marked the beginning of the Civil War.

He stated, “If state militias act against the federal government, it’s a civil war. Walz needs to be quiet now because he’s essentially calling for that.”

Similarly, Representative Rich McCormick (R-Ga.) supported Miller and Van Orden, claiming that Walz was instigating a confrontation between the military and federal troops.

Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) responded to Walz by reminding him of constitutional authority, saying, “Donald Trump is the commander in chief, and federal power supersedes state power.” In a letter, she described Walz’s threats as insurrection and suggested, “Mr. President, the law is on your side. Use it.”
