Cade Cowell Joins Red Bull New York, Eager to Impress Under Michael Bradley
The last time Cade Cowell encountered Michael Bradley, the current head coach of Red Bull New York, things were quite different. Cowell, now 22, was just beginning to make a name for himself in MLS, while Bradley still played for Toronto FC.
Reflecting on their past matchups in 2022 and 2023, Cowell doesn’t recall the exact scores, but he clearly remembers Bradley’s commanding presence. “I remember him controlling the midfield and acting as a leader. It was really impressive to see,” Cowell shared during a Zoom call.
Now, Cowell is set to experience Bradley’s leadership directly. He has joined Red Bull New York on a one-year loan from Chivas Guadalajara, marking his return to the U.S. after a couple of seasons in the Mexican Liga MX.
Despite mixed outcomes during his time in Mexico, Cowell is hopeful that his return to MLS will provide more opportunities on the field. After all, he is keen to attract the attention of the U.S. Men’s National Team ahead of the upcoming World Cup in June.
So far, Cowell has made 11 appearances for the national team but hasn’t been called up since November 2024. “I think I really need a few more great chances to showcase my skills. When I do get a shot, I’m going to make the most of it,” he remarked, expressing a desire to prove he belongs on the roster. The current U.S. squad is indeed strong, making it difficult to break in, but Cowell is optimistic about his chances this year.
The next national team camp isn’t until late March, yet Pochettino’s crew has been on a winning streak, with their last loss to South Korea back in September. They secured notable victories against Paraguay and Uruguay recently, which adds to the challenge for players like Cowell to make the World Cup roster.
Having one of U.S. soccer’s recognized figures as a head coach could be beneficial. Cowell expressed enthusiasm about working with Bradley, planning to ask him for advice on improving his game. The 22-year-old wants to capitalize on every moment to elevate his chances of national selection.
Cowell is still figuring out his specific role at Red Bull New York. While they might have chatted during his contract signing, the real work is set to commence with training camp soon.
Players have recently reported to the training facility, and the Red Bulls are gearing up for their preseason schedule in Florida later this month. This offseason has been notable for significant changes, particularly with Cowell’s arrival bolstering the roster after departures of veteran players like Sean Neils and Lewis Morgan.
Additionally, reports surfaced about the club trading academy product Daniel Edelman to St. Louis SC. Cowell gathered a crucial insight from his discussions with Bradley and sporting director Julian de Guzman: “They didn’t make the playoffs last year, and we don’t want a repeat of that. Winning is a priority for them, and I’m just thrilled to be part of a winning mentality. I hope to contribute however I can.”
