Trump's Justice Department describes the Minnesota ICE lawsuit as 'legally baseless' in court document

Federal Court Case Over ICE Operations in Minnesota

The Trump administration requested a federal judge on Monday to reject Minnesota’s attempt to limit ICE operations within the state. The administration claimed that such restrictions would represent an “unprecedented” overreach.

In their response to the state’s lawsuit, the Department of Justice (DOJ) argued that Minnesota was, in effect, seeking to impose a state veto on the enforcement of federal law, labeling this notion as both “legally frivolous” and “absurd.”

“The Tenth Amendment does not allow states that are unhappy with federal law enforcement to initiate expulsion suits,” the DOJ stated in its filing.

Last week, Minnesota filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, aiming to halt the federal government’s aggressive immigration enforcement, which the state claims has led to heightened fear and tension among residents in the Twin Cities. Court documents allege that the presence of armed agents is disrupting local operations and causing anxiety.

The government’s submission described the injunction sought by Minnesota as an “unprecedented act of judicial overreach.” The DOJ also indicated that federal officers are experiencing an uptick in “violent attacks” during their enforcement actions.

According to the filing, ICE agents from the St. Paul office are encountering increasing threats, violence, invasions, and obstruction during their operations in and around Minneapolis.

Now, Minnesota has until Thursday to respond to these assertions made by the Trump administration.

This lawsuit follows an incident in which ICE agents shot and killed a 37-year-old woman during an operation in south Minneapolis. Federal officials claimed the shooting was in self-defense, asserting that the woman attempted to use her vehicle as a weapon against officers as they attempted to arrest her.

The escalation of immigration enforcement in Minnesota has seen over 2,000 federal agents confront community activists and protesters. Both state officials and the Trump administration are exchanging blame for the rising tensions.
