Justice Department Investigates Disruption of Church Service

On Tuesday, legal expert Kelly Urban shared insights on “America’s Newsroom,” suggesting that recent disruptions of religious services might give the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division a chance to act. She indicated that this incident presents them with a clear opportunity to highlight the consequences of interrupting people’s rights to worship freely.

The conversation arose following an incident in St. Paul, Minnesota, where anti-ICE demonstrators interrupted a church service. The Justice Department is now looking into potential civil rights violations related to this interference.

Urban discussed various legal avenues available for addressing such behavior, including charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing. She explained that laws explicitly prevent this kind of disruption within places of worship and also address collusion aimed at obstructing constitutional rights.

Moreover, there are indeed broad laws that serve to stop interference with the exercise of religious beliefs. Urban mentioned that the Civil Rights Division likely has a robust set of options to handle this situation effectively.

While she noted that state-level authorities might focus on minor charges, she anticipated that civil rights issues would be the central focus of the Justice Department’s inquiry.

Urban concluded by expressing her belief that the protesters might face serious repercussions, suggesting that they have overstepped boundaries that should not be crossed.
