Trump Proposes “Peace Commission” in Gaza

President Donald Trump has proposed a “peace commission” for Gaza that he suggests could potentially serve as a replacement for the United Nations. This idea was described by a national security analyst as a shift in “the existing international order.”

When asked during a press briefing whether he envisioned a new agency to take the place of the UN, Trump responded, “That’s a possibility.” He remarked that the UN has frequently fallen short in its mission.

“The United Nations hasn’t been very helpful. I’m a big fan of the United Nations, but it hasn’t lived up to its potential,” Trump stated. While he believes the UN should continue to exist, he asserted that “All the wars that I have resolved should have been resolved by the United Nations.”

National security expert Kobi Michael indicated that this proposal indicates a departure from the long-standing international framework that has governed global politics for decades. “Norms, international institutions and organizations, liberalism go out, and real politics, interests, and power come in,” he noted. He also commented that the European Union’s significance has diminished.

Michael’s remarks coincide with advancements made by the Trump administration regarding the council’s plans, which are reportedly aimed at resolving issues beyond just the immediate conflicts in Gaza. A statement from the White House outlined that the “Peace Commission will play a critical role” in ensuring strategic oversight, mobilizing international resources, and implementing the President’s comprehensive 20-point plan for Gaza.

Preparations are being made for a signing ceremony in Davos, Switzerland, which is set to include leaders from several countries, including Russia, Belarus, China, and others. The White House has confirmed that formal invitations have recently been sent out.

Trump is set to lead the peace commission, which also includes notable figures like Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, among others from political, diplomatic, and business backgrounds.

This initiative, according to Michael, signifies a fresh approach to the current international system. He mentioned that discussions surrounding the Gaza conflict are part of a broader strategy to reshape the international order, with Iran being a focal point amid ongoing protests and political turmoil in the country.

The future role of Russia in this council remains ambiguous, as President Putin considers the invitation extended by the Trump administration. Michael suggested any participation by Moscow might come with stipulations related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“If President Putin joins, he will likely have to make concessions, including ending the war in Ukraine,” he stated.
