Carbon Monoxide Alert at Florida Middle School Leads to Evacuation

A carbon monoxide alarm went off at a middle school in Florida, leading to the hospitalization of over 20 students and causing a significant emergency response.

Friday saw a flurry of activity at Cypress Junction Montessori in Winter Haven when the alarm was triggered. Fire trucks, police, and ambulances rushed to the scene after reports came in. The Winter Haven Public Safety Department confirmed the incident.

When authorities arrived, all students and staff were already outside. Firefighters quickly turned off the gas and began inspecting the premises. They determined that there was no leak inside the school. The alarm was caused by something detected outside.

As panic spread, medical teams stationed at the site began evaluating students who reported feeling unwell. The Winter Haven Fire Department relayed that 11 students were transported by ambulance, while another 11 were taken by bus for safety as concerned parents observed the situation unfold.

Carbon monoxide can pose serious health risks. At lower levels, it may cause headaches and fatigue, but at higher concentrations, symptoms can escalate to confusion, rapid breathing, and could even be fatal.

Residents, like sisters Luna and Coral Brooks, expressed their fears during the incident. Luna commented, “There was a lot going on with police and a fire drill. Everyone’s okay, but the gas was an issue in a different building.”

Ventilators were brought in, and air quality tests were conducted to ensure everyone’s safety, with officials eventually declaring the area secure.

Throughout the ordeal, the principal, Dr. Chris Newman-Lake, updated anxious parents via email about the situation.

Despite the resolution, the family found it hard to shake their worries. Phillip Brooks, the girls’ father, reflected, “It’s really unsettling when your child’s school makes the news due to fire trucks and police cars.”
