Infected bat discovered near popular SoCal hiking trail raises alert for hikers and pet owners

Warning for Hikers and Pet Owners

Authorities are urging hikers and pet owners to be particularly vigilant following the sighting of a bat on a well-frequented hiking trail that turned out to be deadly.

Health officials have issued a stark reminder about rabies, a virus that can be nearly always fatal once contracted.

The bat was found near the Mesa Trail around 10 a.m. on January 20, according to the Orange County Health Department.

In response, officials promptly issued a public alert, noting that rabies can be passed on through bites, and young individuals may be unaware they’ve been infected—often, they don’t even feel the bite.

People who might have encountered a bat, or who see others handling one, are encouraged to contact the local infectious disease control unit immediately. Additionally, pet owners whose animals may have interacted with bats should reach out to their veterinarian without delay.

Rabies typically spreads via the saliva of an infected animal, mostly through bites, but can also be transferred if saliva enters the eyes, mouth, or an open wound. Once symptoms like fever, confusion, agitation, and swallowing difficulties appear, the disease is almost invariably fatal.

In the past few years, many rabies cases among humans in the United States have been tied back to bats. Their tiny teeth leave barely noticeable marks, which is often why people don’t realize they’ve been bitten.

Because of these dangers, officials are urging anyone who suspects they might be infected to seek immediate medical attention.

Preventive treatments are known to be safe and can effectively stop the virus before it leads to illness, provided they are taken quickly.

Public officials recommend that Californians steer clear of wild animals, ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies, and refrain from touching bats—whether they’re alive or dead. If a bat is discovered in your home, or if one is exhibiting strange behavior outside, it’s essential to report it to animal control for safe handling and examination.

Health officials want to stress this point: while rabies is rare, timing is crucial if infected. Delaying action can result in dire consequences.
