Kanye West Issues Apology in Full-Page Ad

Rapper and fashion influencer Kanye West has taken to the pages of the Wall Street Journal to express his apologies to the Black community and address his past remarks related to anti-Semitism. In this candid piece, he reflects on his battle with bipolar disorder, admitting, “I lost touch with reality.”

West’s letter, which surfaced on Monday, reveals details about a car accident from 25 years ago that caused injury to the frontal lobe of his brain. While the immediate damage was visible, he notes that the more profound effects were overlooked. “The focus was on the visible damage,” he writes, “but the deeper damage, inside the skull, went unnoticed.”

He shares that it wasn’t until 2023 that he finally received the proper diagnosis, which he believes exacerbated his mental health struggles, leading to a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder Type 1. He describes moments of “mania” where he found himself in “denial,” feeling as if those around him were “overreacting” while he passionately believed he had a clearer view of reality—even as he was “completely losing grip.”

“The scariest thing about this disorder is how convincing the words ‘I don’t need help’ can be,” he reflects. This self-deception, he admits, can lead to a false sense of power and insight. “I’ve lost touch with reality,” he asserts, acknowledging that certain actions he’s taken are regretful.

West continues, expressing remorse for his treatment of loved ones during those tumultuous times, saying that they experienced fear and confusion. “Some of the people I loved the most were the ones I treated the worst,” he admitted, which highlights the paradox of loving relationships amid personal turmoil.

He mentions that in what he describes as a “cracking state,” he was drawn to destructive symbols, notably the swastika. “I regret and am deeply sorry for my actions in that state,” he comments, further clarifying, “I’m not a Nazi or an anti-Semite. I love Jews.”

In addition to apologizing to the Black community, which he identifies as the bedrock of who he is, he expressed, “I’m so sorry I let you down. We love you.” He also mentioned the significant influence his words can have as a community leader, although he felt he became lost and manic during that period.

West elaborated on the severity of his manic episodes from last year, describing them as a “four-month” period of psychotic, paranoid, and impulsive behavior that disrupted his life. “As the situation grew unsustainable, there were moments I thought I didn’t want to be here anymore,” he shared.

He further explained that bipolar disorder is not a constant condition; during manic phases, one is indeed ill, while the absence of mania may lead to a sense of normalcy. After “hitting rock bottom,” he revealed that his wife prompted him to seek help, and she found support through online forums about bipolar disorder, realizing that he wasn’t alone in his struggles.

In closing his message, West mentioned that he is establishing “a new standard and a new center for myself” through medication, therapy, and healthy living, which he feels has brought him much-needed clarity. He stated, “I put my energy into positive and meaningful art, whether it’s music, clothing, design, or other new ideas to help the world.”

While he asked for forgiveness, West emphasized that he is not seeking sympathy. Instead, he expressed a simple plea for patience and understanding as he navigates this journey of healing.
