John Fetterman urged President Trump to dismiss DHS Secretary Kristi Noem

Senator John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) has urged President Donald Trump to consider removing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem from her position. In a post on X, he criticized Noem for “betraying” the core mission of her department.

Fetterman specifically tagged Trump’s accounts in his message, stating, “I am appealing directly to @Sec_Noem to be fired immediately.”

He expressed that Noem has compromised the fundamental goals of Homeland Security and criticized her actions, noting, “Americans have died. She betrayed the core mission of DHS and undermined the legacy of border security.” He cautioned against repeating past mistakes, referring to President Biden’s hesitation in firing an ineffective DHS secretary.

Contact has been made with the White House for commentary, but no response has been forthcoming.

In contrast to some of his Democratic peers, Fetterman often adopts a more pragmatic stance on issues relevant to immigration and border security when it comes to engaging with Trump and his party. Recently, he has advised fellow Democrats to avoid calls to dismantle U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The recent shootings of Americans Alex Preti and Renee Good in Minnesota have intensified discussions about immigration, coinciding with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies. “Good and Preti are still alive and well, and their families are grieving for them,” Fetterman remarked in a statement on Monday.

Fetterman has called for an immediate halt to operations in Minneapolis, labeling the situation as “ungovernable and dangerous.” He emphasized a need for a balanced approach towards immigration, stating, “As a very pro-immigration Democrat… I believe our country deserves secure borders and that all criminal immigrants should be deported.” However, he maintains his opposition to abolishing ICE.

Fetterman concluded, “I reject calls to defund or abolish ICE. I strongly oppose many of ICE’s strategies and practices in Minneapolis, and believe they must change.”
