Trump favors Nevada and Texas as potential sites for the GOP midterm convention

President Donald Trump is leaning towards hosting the first-ever midterm convention for Republicans in either Nevada or Texas later this year, as indicated by sources familiar with the discussions.

However, this initial preference for location doesn’t exclude the possibility of other cities being potential hosts, according to those involved.

Last week, the Republican National Committee (RNC) made a pivotal move when Chairman Joe Gruters approved modifications to party rules, enabling the convening of a convention during midterm election years. Gruters referred to the upcoming event as “Trump-a-palooza,” stating it presents an opportunity to showcase the president’s achievements since reclaiming the White House.

National political conventions typically occur in presidential election years, where party representatives formally nominate their presidential candidates. But this year, Republicans are especially motivated to maintain their narrow control in the Senate and a slim majority in the House. In September, President Trump announced plans for a convention designed to “demonstrate the greatness of what we’ve done.”

Dates and locations for the midterm convention should be revealed soon, likely through a presidential announcement. Meanwhile, here’s a breakdown of five cities that could strategically serve as hosts for this event—locations that could bolster Republican advantages in key battleground states.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is not just the entertainment capital of the world; it also represents the largest city in Nevada, where Trump narrowly triumphed in the 2024 election. The state is poised to play a crucial role in the upcoming midterm elections, as Republicans aim to flip three Democratic-held House seats and face a competitive gubernatorial race with Republican Governor Joe Lombardo seeking re-election.

Hosting the convention in Las Vegas might encourage higher Republican voter turnout, especially after the national nominating convention in Milwaukee in 2024. Moreover, it may allow the GOP to connect with a growing number of Hispanic voters and military personnel drawn to its economic policies.

Dallas, Texas

This year, Republicans are focused on safeguarding the Senate seat of John Cornyn in Texas, a long-time Republican stronghold where Democrats are striving to remain competitive. The party is also seeking to flip several House seats from blue to red, having gained control during the redistricting process in Texas. A convention in Dallas could further emphasize outreach to Latino voters.

Phoenix, Arizona

Hosting the convention in Phoenix might provide momentum for Republicans as they aim to retake Arizona’s governorship and protect several Republican-held House seats. This location would also allow the party to resonate their messages around border security and inflation in a critical southwestern battleground, while continuing to engage Latino voters.

Detroit, Michigan

Michigan stands as a high-priority target for Republicans, especially with competitive racing for the Senate and governor’s office. The state is also contending with four closely watched House races, making Detroit a strategic choice to emphasize issues surrounding manufacturing, energy costs, and trade.

Atlanta, Georgia

Republicans perceive Senator Jon Ossoff as particularly vulnerable for re-election this year. The party is also tasked with defending the position of Governor Brian Kemp, who is term-limited. Nominating Atlanta as a host city could showcase Republican efforts to engage the black voter demographic.
