Protests in Los Angeles Lead to Arrests

On Friday night, unrest erupted in Los Angeles as protests escalated. The police took action by arresting several individuals who were seen as instigators of violence, following dispersal orders that were issued.

Earlier in the day, thousands gathered outside City Hall and later headed to the federal detention center. Unfortunately, a group of violent agitators disrupted the scene, barricading entrances with construction dumpsters and instigating chaos.

The Los Angeles Police Department shared videos on social media, indicating the use of pepper balls and tear gas to manage the situation. They noted, “While we hoped for a peaceful demonstration today, the actions of violent instigators led us to call in additional LAPD support.”

During a press conference, Mayor Karen Bass confirmed that five people were arrested for not following the dispersal order, although specifics from the police department on total arrests were not immediately available.

This unrest aligns with similar protests happening nationally, part of the ICE Out Everywhere movement, a response to the recent shooting deaths involving federal officers in Minneapolis.

Bass emphasized the importance of peaceful protests, suggesting that violence counters their goals. “Demonstrations are vital, but they need to remain peaceful to avoid vandalism and ensure that they actually influence change,” she said, expressing concerns over how such actions could be perceived by the administration. She warned against expecting military intervention in response to such unrest.

Law enforcement issued a dispersal order around 5:45 p.m., directing protesters in certain areas to clear out or face arrest. As the situation unfolded, some demonstrators threw rocks and bottles at officers, despite some attempts to leave peacefully.

The department described active confrontations, stating, “Protesters are engaging with officers following multiple dispersal orders.” They also disclosed that federal authorities faced attacks with various objects, prompting a declaration that gatherings near detention centers were illegal.

Rep. Maxine Waters joined the protests, vocally supporting the demonstrators. She remarked that the police were trying to suppress lawful protests by deploying tear gas. Reacting to reports of former CNN host Don Lemon’s arrest at related protests in Minnesota, Bass noted, “His arrest for simply doing his job illustrates a troubling trend in our justice system.” She expressed concerns over the potential erosion of democratic principles under the current administration.

This situation is ongoing, and further updates will follow as the story develops.
