"Not viable from the start": Chuck Schumer states Democrats will fully commit to opposing voter ID bill

Democrats Against Republican Voter ID Legislation

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader from New York, announced that Democrats are ready to oppose Republican efforts to bolster election security with voter ID laws.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which gained approval in the House of Representatives in July, is now awaiting a vote in the Senate. However, Democrats are eager to see it fail.

Schumer stated, “If Democrats opt for a filibuster, they can explain to the American public why they believe noncitizens should be given the right to vote. That’s an argument we’re confident we can win.”

He drew a comparison between the SAVE Act and the oppressive Jim Crow laws historically used against Black Americans post-Civil War, even going so far as to suggest it could lead to a government shutdown.

“We’ve reiterated this before: The SAVE Act imposes Jim Crow-style laws nationwide and will not have any meaningful impact in the Senate,” Schumer remarked in a statement. “This is essentially a poison pill that could ruin any legislation attached to it. Should House Republicans insist on including the SAVE Act in a bipartisan spending bill, it might result in a prolonged shutdown of the Trump administration.”

According to him, the true intent behind the bill is to suppress voter turnout.

“The SAVE Act aims to disenfranchise millions of Americans and undermine the integrity of our elections, while also fuelling skepticism and denial about election outcomes,” he added.

Schumer had previously labeled the SAVE Act as “one of the most abhorrent pieces of legislation I’ve encountered.”

On the contrary, Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy defended the bill against Democratic critiques during a discussion with reporters, claiming, “This represents a common-sense reform that has widespread public backing from those who want free, fair, and secure elections.”

“It’s time for the Senate to take action. We just need 51 Republicans to demand a vote,” he asserted. “And if the Democrats decide on a filibuster, they’ll be forced to explain why they believe noncitizens should be eligible to vote. We’re sure to win that argument.”

The legislation mandates proof of U.S. citizenship for individuals registering to vote in federal elections.
