Cape Cod Chips Plant to Close After 40 Years

A well-known potato chip brand is set to leave its coastal roots after over four decades, though it will keep its iconic name.

In a news release dated January 29, Campbell’s announced plans to close its Hyannis, Massachusetts chip plant. This facility, situated in a seaside town famous for its connections to the Kennedy family, has been in operation since 1985 and will cease production in April.

The company stated that the production of Cape Cod Chips will be moved to a more modern factory, aimed at creating a more agile and efficient manufacturing operation. The main facilities are located in Beloit, Wisconsin, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Hanover, Pennsylvania. Campbell’s emphasized that they will continue to use carefully selected high-quality ingredients.

According to the company, the Hyannis plant contributes only 4% to Cape Cod Chips’ overall production, and keeping it open “no longer makes economic sense.”

Forty-nine employees will be affected by the closure, but Campbell’s has promised to provide them with separation benefits, job placement support, and guidance on accessing state aid programs. Investment initiatives in the region are expected to persist.

This announcement hasn’t been received well by some New England residents on social media. One user lamented, “I’ve been a Cape Cod Chips consumer for years. I’m very, very sad to hear this.” Another expressed disappointment, noting that potato chips played a significant role in New England’s growth.

However, not everyone was disheartened, given the plant’s low production volume. One commenter noted, “They closed down the old factory because it was just for display. I got 4% of the tip.”

Elizabeth Duggan, President of Campbell’s Snacks, explained that the closure is part of a strategy to “strengthen our business and position our snacks for long-term growth.” She added, “We will maintain our presence in the community by honoring our brand’s heritage and continue to invest locally to support Cape Cod’s next generation of food innovators.”
