Teen’s Encounter at Immigration Protest
A 16-year-old girl recounted in a video interview how she confronted an older man sporting a MAGA hat during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement protest in Texas. She labeled him as an “old man” and a “racist,” while also addressing her fellow teenage participants.
“I never imagined it would escalate like this,” Alyssa, a student from Mo & Jean Johnson High School in Buda, shared. “I didn’t think he would actually hit a minor or even get out of the car. I just reacted.”
Alyssa stated that she observed another girl kick the man’s truck, which seemed to trigger his anger. “She kicked the truck just once, and suddenly he was furious. He got out of the car and went straight for her.”
She added that the man, being an adult, should have acted differently. “He could have just called the police instead of getting out of the car to confront the girl.”
Alyssa noted that a cellphone video taken by another student captured the moment she intervened. “He was on top of her, hitting her. I couldn’t stand by—I pulled him off her and hit him myself. That’s when the situation turned chaotic,” she explained.
In her interview, she expressed understanding for her peers’ actions during the incident. “It’s just teenagers being teenagers. If they see someone attacking a girl while protesting, of course, they’ll step in to help,” she insisted.
Alyssa further emphasized that the man should have recognized the situation and refrained from putting his hands on a minor. “He should have acted better. It’s children who were there protesting,” she stated.
She mentioned that her father was furious when she told him about the man grabbing her hair. “I was really angry,” said her dad, Jose Loredo. “We should know better as adults. He could have just walked away instead of confronting the kids.”
The Buda Police reported that Chad Michael Watts, 45, was charged with two counts of assault leading to bodily injury. He was arrested on Tuesday and released the next day on two $2,500 bonds. Authorities indicated that Watts had no prior violent crime history.
The police identified Watts as the main aggressor but also mentioned that they might pursue charges against the boys who participated in the fight. “We aim to conduct a thorough investigation to hold everyone accountable,” an officer noted.
Attempts to reach Watts for a comment were unsuccessful.
