James Pierce Jr. Arrested for Multiple Felonies
On Monday, more details surfaced about the recent arrest of Atlanta Falcons defensive end James Pierce Jr.
Pierce was taken into custody last week near Miami, facing a slew of serious charges, including two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking, and fleeing from the police. According to Doral police reports, the situation stemmed from a domestic dispute involving his WNBA girlfriend.
After posting a bond of $20,500, he was released from Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Facility and instructed to maintain distance from his girlfriend.
The police allege that Pierce attempted to escape law enforcement before crashing his vehicle into another car, which was driven by his girlfriend, and in the process, he struck an officer. ESPN cites a criminal complaint from the Miami-Dade County State’s Attorney’s Office for more context.
The alleged victim indicated that she noticed Pierce trailing her in a white luxury car. When she halted at a red light, he reportedly tried to enter her vehicle. In response, she began driving toward the Doral Police Department, where she said Pierce cut her off and collided with her car.
Doral police arrived at the scene, and during the incident, officers had to subdue Pierce, pointing a gun at him to bring the situation under control. However, he managed to re-enter his vehicle and escape, with suspicions that he struck an officer while doing so.
Charges against him include crashing the car and resisting arrest.
His attorney expressed the hope of working closely with the State Attorney’s Office to uncover the truth, noting that Pierce maintains his innocence. The attorney emphasized that while allegations can heavily influence public perception, they don’t represent the whole story and expressed confidence in effectively defending Pierce.
The Falcons organization issued a statement indicating that they are gathering more information on the case. They face the pressing decision of whether to keep Pierce on the roster as the new NFL season looms just weeks away.
Notably, Pierce recently finished third in the voting for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and attended the NFL Honors ceremony in California shortly before his arrest.
