Democrat Claims Republican Election Bill is Voter Suppression

During a recent news conference, House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York expressed strong criticism of the Republican-led Save America Act, labeling it as a method of “voter suppression.” The act is set to be voted on later this week, possibly as soon as Wednesday.

Jeffries stated, “Republicans are employing voter suppression as an election strategy, and that’s exactly what the so-called SAVE Act is about.” He also noted that the current version of the bill is “worse” than a previous one known as the Protecting American Voter Eligibility Act, which passed the House back in April 2025 with the support of all Republicans and four Democrats.

The main aim of the original SAVE Act was to add new requirements for proving citizenship when registering to vote in all states. This newer proposal, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), seeks to set federal standards for voter identification at polling stations and mandates that voters show ID for national elections.

Jeffries further accused Republicans of attempting to share Americans’ data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), pointing to a clause in the bill that would require state election officials to share information with federal agencies for verifying citizenship status on voter rolls.

“From what I understand, this version actually gives the Department of Homeland Security the authority to access voting records from states across the country. Why do extremists think that’s a good idea?” he questioned.

He continued, “Who would want more data about American citizens from DHS and ICE, which have brutally and violently targeted ordinary Americans? That’s outrageous. There’s something really wrong with these people. I think they’re trying to lose the election at this point.”

Currently, there is no verified evidence suggesting that non-citizen voting has changed the outcomes of federal elections. Nonetheless, Republicans assert that the increase in illegal immigration under the Biden administration poses a real threat of influencing future elections.

Interestingly, voter ID provisions seem to enjoy widespread support based on recent public polls. A Pew Research Center survey from August 2025 found that a significant 83% of people were in favor of requiring government-issued photo ID to vote, while only 16% opposed it.

Jeffries indicated that he believes the bill will ultimately fail in the Senate, where it would need some Democratic support to overcome a filibuster. He remarked, “It’s not going to pass. It might squeak by in the House, but it’s dead when it reaches the Senate. It’s a waste of time.”

Due to the challenges it faces in the Senate, a group of House conservatives is urging Senate Majority Leader John Thune (D) to change the rules regarding filibusters to eliminate the 60-vote threshold necessary to advance legislation. However, Thune has yet to commit to any specific plan.
