President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Saturday to criticize Bill Maher, the host of “Real Time,” calling him a “total waste of time” during their dinner at the White House last April. Trump responded to Maher’s recent jabs at him, particularly regarding comments about China’s influence on Canadian hockey.
“Sometimes in life you just waste time!” Trump began. He shared details about their dinner, mentioning how different Maher looked than he expected—nervous and self-conscious. “I ordered a vodka tonic to calm my nerves,” Trump said, recalling Maher’s admission that he felt scared during their meeting. “In a way, it was kind of endearing!”
Following their dinner, Trump remarked that Maher seemed respectful of their conversation during the subsequent show. However, he expressed frustration over Maher’s show returning to the same old, anti-Trump narratives. Trump pointed out accomplishments from his presidency, citing low crime rates and high stock indexes, questioning why Maher didn’t focus on those instead.
He described dealing with certain people at the White House as a complete waste, continuing to note that Canada has been outmaneuvering the U.S. on trade. He humorously stated, “The first thing China will do is cancel all ice hockey in Canada,” suggesting Maher’s overreaction to his comments.
Trump compared Maher to other late-night hosts, like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, admitting Maher might have a bit more talent but concluded that he’s “hugely overrated.” He claimed the Republican Party should stop highlighting Maher as an example of leftist views, warning that it makes them look weak.
In referring to Maher’s so-called “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” Trump wrapped up his post by saying he’d prefer to focus on making America great again rather than wasting time on Maher.
While Fox News Digital reached out to Maher’s team for a response, there has been no immediate reaction from them. After their dinner, Kid Rock, a friend of Trump’s, had facilitated the meeting between Maher and the former president, which Maher later described as friendly, offering compliments towards Trump.
Maher mentioned he was taken by surprise at Trump’s politeness, stating in an interview, “You may hate me for that, but I’m not a liar. Trump was a polite and thoughtful man.” He maintained that he was just sharing his honest impressions without any substance-altering influences.
