Redwood High School students face consequences for homophobic behavior on bleachers

Recently, a group of high school students in California faced disciplinary action after they were seen in the bleachers wearing shirts that featured homophobic slurs, which caused quite a stir in their school district.

A total of ten students from Redwood High School, located southeast of Fresno, including some members of the student council, posed for photos with their arms crossed while wearing white T-shirts that displayed the word “F—-t.”

According to Visalia Unified School District spokeswoman Cristina Gutierrez, the students first donned shirts for senior class photos that read “Always Legal, Class of 2026,” while they were inside the gymnasium. However, they later altered the shirt to include a “6” in place of the “g” in the slur.

School officials were alerted to the issues when images of the students began circulating online.

Visalia Unified Superintendent Kirk Schramm released a statement, indicating, “We recently learned that Redwood students are collaborating to create images circulating that depict hateful and homophobic slurs.”

He condemned the behavior and emphasized that the situation would be investigated thoroughly with appropriate actions taken.

Gutierrez mentioned that the community was particularly shocked, noting that some of those involved held leadership roles in the student government.

By Friday, the district confirmed that it had implemented “appropriate disciplinary action” against the involved student as reported. While specific details regarding the punishment were not disclosed, the group of ten could face suspension or expulsion, aligning with school board policies.
