LeBron James Faces Criticism from Mehdi Hasan over Israel Comments
MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan has taken issue with NBA star LeBron James for expressing a positive sentiment about Israel before the All-Star Game this Sunday.
Prior to the game, James held a separate press conference. During this, he was asked about Deni Avdija, an Israeli-born player for the Portland Trail Blazers, who had been selected for his first All-Star Game. James was questioned about the message he would convey to NBA fans in Israel.
James responded, “I think Deni is an All-Star, playing exceptional basketball.” He mentioned that, although he had never visited Israel, he had heard great stories about the country.
Avdija has made history as the only active NBA player born in Israel and becomes the fourth Israeli player in the league, following Omri Casspi, TJ Leaf, and Gal Mekel.
James then shared a gentle message aimed at fans in Israel, saying, “If I have fans over there, I hope they’ll follow my career. I’d like to inspire people not just in sports, but in life. I’d love to visit someday.”
However, Hasan expressed his disdain for James’ remarks, calling the situation a disgrace and criticizing the positive message directed towards Jews. He even disabled comments on his post expressing this sentiment.
Hasan has a history of controversial statements, including labeling Republicans as Nazis. After the recent terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, he propagated several extreme narratives, including unfounded claims regarding Israel’s responsibility in attacks on hospitals in Gaza and absurd comparisons between Israel’s actions in Gaza and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
