Two men have been apprehended in connection with a violent home invasion in North Carolina, identified as illegal immigrants from Mexico. They are accused of assaulting, beating, and terrorizing a male victim, including a shocking act of tearing off his fingernails, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
This incident occurred in the early hours last Wednesday in a typically quiet suburb of Greenville, with authorities noting the involvement of at least three male suspects.
“Two violent criminals entered the victim’s home, wielded a sharp knife, and held him against his will,” the DHS reported. Local sources described the scene as a “real-life nightmare,” emphasizing the heinous nature of the acts involved, which included robbery, kidnapping, and sexual assault.
The suspects have been named as 21-year-old Zaid Mayen from Chapel Hill and 20-year-old Jonathan David Garcia-Larios, a homeless man previously deported in 2024. They were arrested last Friday with the help of U.S. Marshals and local law enforcement.
Authorities are still trying to determine when the suspects entered the U.S. It’s worth noting that, prior to this incident, they had no recorded criminal history in the country, yet DHS referred to them as “two sexual perverts and thugs” who carried out the horrific attacks.
The unnamed victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and has, fortunately, survived the ordeal. DHS added that their federal agents work hard every day to protect American communities from such tragedies.
Meanwhile, a third suspect named John Carlos Calderon, 22, has also been arrested, and his immigration status is under review. All three individuals face serious charges, including forced sexual assault, kidnapping, and robbery.
Garcia-Larios and Mayen are being held without bail at their respective detention centers, while Calderon, apprehended on Monday, is similarly detained.
Federal authorities have highlighted that victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants can seek help through the Office of Victims of Immigration Crimes, providing a resource for those affected.
