US women's hockey team decides on invitation to Trump's State of the Union address

U.S. Women’s Hockey Team Declines Trump Invitation

The U.S. women’s ice hockey team recently celebrated their gold medal victory in Canada at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games. However, they turned down an invitation from President Donald Trump to attend his State of the Union address on Tuesday.

USA Hockey expressed their gratitude in a statement, acknowledging the invitation and the recognition of the team’s remarkable achievements. “Due to timing and academic and professional commitments post-Olympics, the athletes won’t be able to attend,” they conveyed. “They are honored and thankful for the acknowledgment, though.”

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comments on the situation.

The women’s team has been impressive this Olympics. Their gold medal match against Canada was particularly exciting, highlighted by Hilary Knight’s late goal that pushed the game into overtime. Ultimately, Megan Keller scored the decisive golden goal, clinching the win for the U.S.

Interestingly, just days later, the men’s hockey team matched this achievement, with Jack Hughes scoring the game-winning goal against Canada, adding to a victorious tournament for the U.S.

Following their victory, Trump invited the men’s team to the State of the Union, though it’s uncertain if they will attend, given the NHL schedule resumes shortly thereafter.

In a conversation with the men’s team, Trump discussed arrangements for their attendance, mentioning he could “send a military plane or something.” One player humorously interjected, affirming their interest in going.

Trump also addressed the women’s team during this discussion, indicating his desire to include them as well, jokingly suggesting he’d face backlash if he didn’t. The Women’s Professional Hockey League is set to resume games soon.
