Alabama Man Arrested in Online Predator Case
Authorities report that a suspected predator allegedly coerced a teenage girl he connected with on Roblox into sending nude images and has faced charges following her attempted suicides.
Landen Westfall, 24, was taken into custody at his residence in Athens, Alabama, on February 9. He faces over 260 counts concerning lewd acts involving a minor, and this followed a detailed four-month investigation that may lead to federal charges, as indicated by the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office.
According to the sheriff, Westfall met the girl from Louisiana through an online chat on the widely-used children’s game, Roblox. However, the situation escalated when he transitioned their conversation to a different platform, where he allegedly displayed abusive and threatening behavior.
The two reportedly began video chatting, and it was during these interactions that Westfall allegedly became aggressive. He is accused of forcing the girl to harm herself and encouraging her to attempt suicide on two separate occasions.
Westfall now faces multiple charges, including two counts of aiding and abetting suicide, 261 counts of lewd acts with a child, and 15 counts concerning child pornography. His bail has been set at $750,000.
The sheriff cautioned about the risks associated with online gaming as the FBI continues its investigation, with potential federal charges looming.
Sheriff Craig Webre advised parents to engage in conversations with their children regarding the threats posed by online predators. He emphasized that even games designed for kids, like Roblox, can be exploited. He urged vigilance and the necessity for parents to monitor their children’s online interactions.
In a related note, David R. Fitzgibbons, an FBI special agent in Birmingham, reiterated the urgency of the issue, stating, “Crime knows no boundaries, and neither should we.”
In response to raising safety concerns, Roblox officials announced that they would be implementing age verification measures for their 151 million users to ensure that children chat only with peers their own age, limiting interactions with adults. Chat features for users under 9 years old are disabled by default and require parental approval after age checks.
