"Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette" Addresses the Couple's Public Struggles and Reflects on Society in the Process

Reflections on Episode 5 of *Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette*

After watching the latest installment, I found myself pondering, who are we to judge? *Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette* continues to offer a thought-provoking narrative.

**Spoiler alert for episode 5 “Battery Park” now available on Hulu**

In this episode of FX and Hulu’s historical drama, we see Carolyn (Sarah Pidgeon) and John (Paul Anthony Kelly) navigating the public side of their relationship, which had just been thrust into the spotlight following episode 4. With Carolyn’s photo splashed across tabloids, John decides it’s time to introduce her to his family in Hyannis Port, essentially bringing her into a challenging environment.

Watching this episode is, honestly, a bit nerve-wracking. You see Carolyn stumble during her first visit with the Kennedys—skipping breakfast, awkwardly fielding questions at dinner, and feeling entirely out of place. It’s hard to witness, really.

Then there’s the marriage proposal that didn’t go as planned, coupled with a public announcement about their relationship status. This all stirs up a lot of tension as Carolyn’s newfound fame becomes quite volatile.

When a confrontation erupts between John and another man in Battery Park, it feels almost too uncomfortable to watch. Yet, we know it’s pulled from their real-life struggles, adding a layer of gravity. This conflict unfolds around February 1996, capturing a moment that was anything but trivial.

The scene is intense: the two men shout, exchange punches, and trade harsh words while a photographer captures every moment. You’d think that in a bustling city like New York, people would just shrug it off and move on, but that’s not how it plays out here.

Unfortunately, this dramatic exchange and the resulting images did exactly what the tabloids intended: they sold like hotcakes. To my dismay, I was caught up in the frenzy. It’s reminiscent of how people clamored for images of Princess Diana right up until her final moments. That hunger for drama seems to extend to the Kennedy lineage, often dubbed America’s royal family.

It’s perplexing, really. While I get the allure of sensational stories that break the monotony of daily life, it feels somewhat cruel to witness two individuals—just like anyone else—going through a tough time have their lives turned into entertainment.

This is part of why I feel compelled to watch and critique this series. When real people are involved, especially those lacking the agency to defend themselves, it calls for a deeper examination. Observing this scene evokes a painful realization that perhaps we are all somewhat complicit.

As we engage with this kind of content, it’s worth considering the implications of our consumption. It definitely prompts reflection.

*Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette* has its first five episodes available on Hulu, with new episodes airing Thursdays at 9 PM PT.
