FBI Director Kash Patel announced on Saturday that he had heightened the alert level for the agency’s counterterrorism and intelligence units in light of ongoing U.S. operations against Iran.
“I instructed our counterterrorism and intelligence teams to remain vigilant and mobilize necessary security resources,” Patel mentioned on X. He emphasized that the Joint Terrorism Task Forces across the nation are continuously working to identify and prevent potential threats to the homeland.
While U.S. military operations focus on protecting forces overseas, Patel underscored the FBI’s commitment to combating threats at home, ensuring the safety of American citizens around the clock.
Law enforcement officials noted that this heightened state typically involves increased surveillance of key suspects and the activation of intelligence sources, along with enhancing technical intelligence efforts.
This proactive stance follows the U.S.’s continued military actions against Iranian targets amid rising regional tensions.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated, “We are collaborating with federal intelligence and law enforcement to monitor and counter any potential threats to our homeland.” This alert will remain active even during a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.
Jason Pack, a former FBI supervisory special agent, explained that such vigilance is a routine response when U.S. military missions coincide with nations that may retaliate in unconventional ways. He noted that the intelligence and counterterrorism communities are routinely assessing various scenarios long before conflicts arise.
Pack highlighted that the domestic threat landscape could change significantly if the U.S. engages in military operations alongside Israel, due to the historical responses of adversaries like Iran, Hezbollah, and various proxies.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed they are actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with various partners. They mentioned that their protection model is flexible and may involve a noticeable increase in law enforcement presence around certain locations.
In D.C., the Metropolitan Police Department stated they are closely observing the developments in Iran and are working with local and federal agencies to maintain safety for residents and visitors.
Though the D.C. police have indicated there is “no known threat at this time,” they are prepared to enhance their presence as required and encouraged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.
