Bobby Hurley No Longer Head Coach at Arizona State
Bobby Hurley’s lengthy stint as the head coach of Arizona State has officially concluded.
Following the Sun Devils’ defeat to Iowa State in the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday, the university announced it would not extend Hurley’s contract.
In a statement, ASU Athletic Director Graham Rossini acknowledged Hurley’s “incredible contributions to the sport of basketball,” highlighting his 11 years at the helm of the Sun Devils.
“While we don’t plan to renew his contract, we truly appreciate Coach Leslie, Cameron, Sidney, Bobby Jr., and the 11 years he devoted to ASU. We wish him the best for the future and are thankful for his leadership,” Rossini said.
During his tenure, Hurley guided the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, with back-to-back invitations in 2018 and 2019. Yet, the last three seasons have not been kind, as the Sun Devils compiled a total of 44 wins against 54 losses.
Against Big 12 opponents, ASU posted a record of 19 wins to 39 losses during this period.
Hurley finished his 11-season run with a 185-167 overall record, making him the second-winningest coach in Arizona State men’s basketball history, just behind Ned Wolk, who achieved 406 wins from 1957 to 1982.
In a press conference after Wednesday’s loss, Hurley reflected on his time in Tempe before the announcement was made.
“It’s been a long journey. A special time, indeed,” Hurley remarked. “Two of my kids graduated from ASU. I had the chance to coach fantastic young athletes and create some truly significant moments over the years. This is a great university with an excellent administration and president, but, you know, you never really know what’s next. I haven’t discussed my future for next year yet, but I carry no regrets. I gave it my all every night.”
He was also seen visiting the team hotel to connect with players right after hearing the news about his departure.
Later, in a post on X, Hurley expressed, “Throughout this journey, my family and I built lasting friendships and wonderful memories. We made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, achieved notable victories at Desert Financial Arena, and enjoyed watching our children become Sun Devil alumni.”
“Thank you to all the players. It has been my greatest honor to coach so many talented young individuals, and I will always treasure the times we shared.”
