Iranian Soccer Players Practice in Australia Amid Asylum Status
Two female Iranian soccer players chose to stay in Australia rather than return home due to the escalating conflict between the United States and Israel. On Monday, they were spotted training at their club, Brisbane Roar.
The club shared a snapshot on their Instagram featuring Fatemeh Pasandide and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh. This marked their first public appearance since it was revealed they were granted asylum in Australia.
Both players smiled as they posed with team members, notably without hijabs. Brisbane Roar’s CEO, Kaz Patahta, emphasized the club’s dedication to supporting them moving forward, and Ramezanisadeh expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you for everything.”
Brisbane Roar competes in Australia’s Elite A-League women’s division. Although the club refrained from additional comments, they referred inquiries to the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Recently, Brisbane extended an offer for Iranian female players to find a safe space to practice and play.
Last week, the Australian government also offered asylum to all members of the Iranian women’s soccer team returning to Iran, leading to a situation where seven players opted to remain in Australia. However, at least five have since decided to return home.
World leaders, including President Donald Trump, urged Australia to provide asylum for women fleeing conflict. Some Iranian sources labeled the players as “wartime traitors” for not participating in the national anthem before a Women’s Asian Cup match. Iranian officials, on the other hand, dismissed claims of danger for those returning, with Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref asserting that the country welcomes its citizens back warmly and assures their safety.
Interestingly, while the rest of the Iranian team departed from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur and Oman, the specific reasons behind these decisions remain somewhat unclear. It’s a complex situation that highlights the evolving dynamics of sports, politics, and individual choices.
