Army Secretary Discusses Sacrifice of Service Members
In Washington, Army Secretary Pete Hegseth shared a poignant moment with his 13-year-old son, reflecting on the significance of U.S. service members’ sacrifices. He explained to his son that these brave individuals gave their lives to ensure future generations wouldn’t have to confront a nuclear-armed Iran.
Hegseth described the conversation during a press briefing about the ongoing conflict with Iran. “My son came into my office last night while I was preparing these statements,” he recalled. “He asked me about the war and the families he had met in Dover.” In response, Hegseth said, “Son, they died for you so you wouldn’t have to deal with the Iranian nuclear issue.”
He emphasized, “This is the truth; they did it. For those families who have urged, ‘End it,’ we will do it.”
As the father of seven children from three marriages, including four with his current wife, Jennifer, Hegseth’s personal experiences shape his perspective. He joined President Trump at Dover Air Force Base on Wednesday to honor six airmen who lost their lives in a plane crash while supporting Operation Epic Fury in western Iraq.
The tanker went down in an area considered safe, and U.S. Central Command has dismissed any notions of enemy fire or attacks as contributing factors. An investigation is ongoing to determine the crash’s cause.
“Through the tears, embraces, and resolute determination, I noticed a common thread in the conversations among the families,” Hegseth said. “They conveyed a clear message: ‘Get this done. Honor their sacrifice. Don’t become disheartened. Keep going until the mission is accomplished.’”
Hegseth assured them, “I will honor their sacrifice” and reiterated his intention to “end this.”
Since February 28, the U.S. has been engaged in Operation Epic Fury, which is a large-scale air operation targeting Iran. Hegseth, a veteran of both the Second Gulf War and the Afghanistan War, pointed out the dangerous technologies Iran has supplied to Iraq that have contributed to the deaths of American soldiers.
He stated, “No matter where it is, whether in Iraq or elsewhere, they have consistently targeted Americans. President Trump will not stand for a regime like that moving closer to nuclear capabilities.”
