Iran Fires Missiles at U.S.-British Base

Iran launched two missiles targeting a U.S.-British military installation located about 4,500 miles away from its borders, stirring concerns about the long-range capabilities of Iranian missiles.

Although both missiles missed their intended target, which was Diego Garcia, the attempt surprised many. This location is about twice the range that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had suggested. Reports reveal that the launches were intentionally confined to February, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

Diego Garcia, a British territory within the Chagos archipelago, plays a significant role as a joint military base for the U.S. and Britain since the Cold War era.

Sadly, one of the Iranian missiles malfunctioned during its flight, while the other was reportedly intercepted by a U.S. warship. However, details about whether the interception was successful remain unclear.

The Wall Street Journal notes that, contrary to previous statements by Araghchi claiming limitations on missile range, there are indications that Iran possesses missiles capable of reaching Diego Garcia. An Israeli research center has noted that, despite Iran’s assertion that their missiles currently max out at around 3,000 kilometers (approximately 1,900 miles), there is evidence they’re working on technologies for longer-range missiles.

Attempts to contact U.S. Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia for comments went unanswered. The facility, located on a tropical island in the Indian Ocean, is staffed with Navy and Air Force personnel who are responsible for supporting military operations.

The recent missile launches occurred roughly three weeks after the commencement of Operation Epic Fury on February 28, during which the United States conducted successful strikes against Iran, including the removal of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
