Iranian and Romanian Nationals Charged in Nuclear Base Incident
This week, police in Scotland revealed that they have charged an Iranian man and a Romanian woman in connection with an alleged attempt to breach a nuclear missile base in Scotland.
Authorities reported that they received a tip-off about two individuals trying to enter Clyde Naval Base around 5pm on Thursday. They arrested a 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old Romanian woman, who are now scheduled to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday, March 23. The investigation is still ongoing.
According to reports, the pair were removed from the base due to lacking appropriate passes. They were later detained nearby on suspicion of “acting suspiciously in the vicinity,” as noted in various media sources.
Clyde Naval Base, widely recognized as Faslane, serves as the principal base for the UK’s missile fleet. The Royal Navy characterizes it as the core of the nation’s nuclear deterrent and submarine force, which includes advanced hunter-killer submarines.
As stated by the British Parliament, the Royal Navy manages a fleet of nine submarines located at Naval Base Clyde. This includes five Astute-class nuclear attack submarines and four Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines, which collectively make up the UK’s submarine-based nuclear deterrent.
A spokesperson for the Royal Navy commented on the situation, mentioning that the two were arrested during an unsuccessful attempt to access Clyde Naval Base on March 19. They added that, due to the ongoing investigation, no further details will be shared at this time.
