A Serial Bank Robber Caught After a Five-Day Crime Spree
A man with a record of bank robbery was apprehended in New York City on Wednesday following a five-day stealing spree that earned him a total of $600.
Gusatovo DeJesus Torres, 33, was taken into custody in Newark, New Jersey, after being suspected of multiple bank robberies in New York City, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
From March 13 to 17, he attempted to rob six Chase Bank branches located in downtown Brooklyn, Flatbush, Harlem, the Melrose area of the Bronx, and neighborhoods in Queens like Long Island City and Jackson Heights.
During these robberies, Torres handed notes to bank tellers that demanded money, often including threats of violence if they didn’t comply.
Unfortunately for him, luck wasn’t on his side; he was able to successfully rob only three locations, making off with $320 from Jackson Heights, $265 from Flatbush, and a meager $20 from Harlem.
Authorities, including the U.S. Marshals, New York City Police, and Newark Police, using surveillance footage and tips from the public, successfully tracked and arrested the wanted man.
It appears this isn’t Torres’s first encounter with the law. Back in June 2021, he was arrested in Newark for robbing a Chase Bank, walking away with $6,000.
At that time, he allegedly threatened a teller by saying, “I’m heavily armed, so don’t make a scene.”
Additionally, he is thought to have participated in an April 2025 bank robbery at a TD Bank in Tribeca, where he stole $600.
Torres now faces charges for violating the terms of his federal supervision, alongside new charges related to the recent bank robberies.
“We are dedicated to ensuring our communities remain safe and holding those who commit these crimes accountable,” remarked New Jersey Deputy U.S. Marshal Nicholas Ricigliano.
The U.S. Marshals Service did not provide further comments when requested.
