Americans Stranded in the Middle East

The U.S. State Department is looking into ways to help Americans evacuate from the Middle East. Recently, they reported that over 9,000 Americans have managed to return from the area in just a few days. Interestingly, out of that number, only 300 are from Israel.

U.S. officials have noted that Iran and its affiliated militias have directed threats towards Lebanese universities. Consequently, the State Department has urged American citizens to leave Lebanon while there are still commercial flights available.

I mean, it seems like the situation is quite precarious. Officials have indicated that Iran poses a significant threat to American institutions throughout the region.

As per the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, the security situation there appears “unstable and unpredictable.” They mentioned that airstrikes and rocket attacks are happening across the country, mainly in the south, the Bekaa Valley, and some parts of Beirut.

The embassy further advised U.S. nationals located in southern Lebanon, as well as near the Syrian border and refugee zones, to promptly leave these areas.

“We recommend that Americans who choose to stay in Lebanon should have a backup plan for emergencies. It’s wise to be ready to evacuate if things escalate,” the State Department cautioned.

Commercial flights are being offered by Middle East Airlines from Beirut’s Rafic Hariri Airport, and officials suggest that Americans consider leaving on these flights “if conditions allow.”

Additionally, the U.S. Embassy is providing limited emergency passport services to U.S. citizens. It’s worth mentioning that all routine consular functions, like visa processing, are currently suspended until further notice.

Overall, it’s probably a good time to rethink any plans involving travel to Lebanon. It just doesn’t seem like the right moment for that kind of trip.
