Trump Addresses Leak During Rescue Mission
President Donald Trump stated that the Iranian government would attempt to track down the individual responsible for leaking information about a second U.S. airman still unaccounted for during a rescue mission. He also encouraged media outlets to disclose their sources, citing national security concerns.
During a press conference at the White House on April 6, following the recovery of two airmen after an F-15E Strike Eagle was downed over Iran, Trump elaborated on the challenging rescue operation carried out in Iranian territory. While the pilot was successfully retrieved within hours, the weapons systems officer remained stranded until Saturday night, having ejected several miles away.
Trump confirmed the successful recovery shortly after midnight on Easter Sunday.
At a Monday press briefing, he explained that after the first crew member was saved, officials chose to keep details about the second aviator under wraps. Unfortunately, leaks suggested another American was alive in Iran, leading Trump to label the leaker as a “sick man.”
“As you might know, we didn’t say anything for an hour about the first person. Then, someone leaked something. Hopefully, we can find the leaker,” Trump remarked.
“They basically said we had one person missing. Well, they didn’t know someone else was missing until this leaker came forward with the information.”
Trump further noted, “We’re looking very hard to find the leaker. We’re going to approach the media outlet that published it and demand they reveal their source or face consequences.” He pointed out that this disclosure alerted Iran, making the operation significantly more perilous. “They suddenly knew there was a pilot fighting for his life,” Trump added.
He explained that the leak complicated the search efforts. “The leaker revealed that we had a pilot, making the operation more difficult. We managed to rescue one, but another remained out there.” Moreover, Trump mentioned that Iran had issued a significant announcement promising a “very large reward for anyone who captures the pilot.”
“So along with facing a highly capable and dangerous military, millions of people were trying to secure that prize,” Trump commented.
The rescue of the second airman was described as one of the most intricate in U.S. special operations history, involving about 200 personnel, including members of SEAL Team 6, along with drones, helicopters, and surveillance aircraft operating over Iran. The missing officer’s attempts to avoid detection by limiting the use of his emergency beacon and radio required U.S. intelligence to analyze sporadic signals, trying to discern whether they were authentic or a potential trap. He had sent out a message stating, “God is good,” which later matched his known religious sentiments.
The CIA initiated a deception effort to imply that the pilot had been rescued. However, on Saturday night, before special operations helicopters could deploy from a makeshift base in Iran, U.S. military aircraft targeted the vicinity around the extraction zone. This action secured the area and enabled a return to a temporary airstrip. Unfortunately, two MC-130J aircraft became stuck in the sand during departure, necessitating personnel transfers to replacement aircraft and the destruction of disabled units, including light helicopters, before the withdrawal. Fortunately, all U.S. military personnel were evacuated without fatalities, leading President Trump to characterize the recovery as an “Easter miracle.”
