Trump Jokes About Gulf Name Change

During a recent interview, President Trump made a light-hearted comment about considering a name change for the Gulf of Mexico, humorously suggesting he thought about calling it the “Gulf of America.” He clarified, though, that he was just joking.

“I might have named it ‘Trump Bay,’ but I figured that wouldn’t really fly,” Trump, 79, shared on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” He questioned why it’s still called the Gulf of Mexico when it covers such a large part of the U.S. coastline.

According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. governs about 46% of the Gulf of Mexico’s coastline.

Last year, on his first day back in the White House, Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The White House even criticized the Associated Press for not acknowledging this change.

Recently, Trump stated that the U.S. plans to ship a substantial amount of oil to support countries affected by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage where a significant portion of the world’s offshore oil travels annually.

“A number of huge, empty oil tankers are now coming to the U.S. to load top-quality oil,” he declared on social media. “We have more oil than the next two largest oil-producing countries combined, and it’s of higher quality. We’re ready for you!”

On Sunday, he announced a blockade at a key oil chokepoint following Iran’s claims related to its mines and charging for passage through the waterway.

Interestingly, Trump had previously joked about renaming the Strait of Hormuz, potentially calling it the “Straits of America.” There have been prior instances where he hinted at naming things after himself before proceeding with those changes.

For instance, he mentioned last August that some people referred to it as the Trump Kennedy Center, suggesting that it could be officially named that in the future.

By December, the new name became official, and his administration also renamed the U.S. Institute of Peace to the Donald J. Trump Peace Institute.
