Texas looks into ‘forever chemicals’ in Lululemon workout clothing

Texas Attorney General Investigates Lululemon Over Health Concerns

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an investigation into Lululemon, a major player in the activewear market, amid concerns about the possible inclusion of “forever chemicals” in its clothing. These chemicals, known scientifically as polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), have been linked to various health issues.

In a statement released on Monday, Paxton highlighted emerging research regarding consumer worries about PFAS in Lululemon products. The investigation aims to find out if the company has misled its customers regarding the safety and health implications of its offerings.

Paxton pointed out that based on the brand’s marketing, consumers who prioritize health wouldn’t expect their clothing to contain harmful synthetic materials. Additionally, he mentioned that these substances might be associated with serious health risks such as endocrine disruption, infertility, and even cancer.

“Americans should not have to worry about being deceived when they are trying to make healthy choices for themselves and their families,” Paxton remarked. “We will not allow any company to sell harmful toxic substances at premium prices under the guise of health and sustainability. If Lululemon violates Texas law, we will hold them accountable.”

The Attorney General’s Office is also set to examine Lululemon’s restricted substances list, testing methods, and supply chain practices to ensure compliance with existing safety standards.

Lululemon responded to the claims by stating that it phased out the use of PFAS in its products in 2024. In an email statement, the company specified that these chemicals were only utilized in durable water-repellent items and constituted a small segment of their apparel range.

“The health and safety of our guests is our top priority, and our products meet or exceed global safety and quality standards,” Lululemon affirmed. They noted that all vendors are required to undergo routine testing for restricted substances, including PFAS, by a third-party entity to ensure compliant practices.

As part of the investigation, Texas plans to closely assess Lululemon’s Restricted Substances List, testing protocols, and supply chain practices to see if the brand’s products indeed adhere to prescribed safety regulations.

This scrutiny of Lululemon aligns with broader public health objectives prioritized by the Trump administration, particularly under the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) agenda, which focuses on improving drinking water safety and eliminating harmful chemicals from food sources.
