New footage reveals Oklahoma principal tackling gunman during high school shooting

Oklahoma High School Principal Tackles Gunman

A recently released video captures a tense moment at Pauls Valley High School, where Principal Kirk Moore confronted a gunman who opened fire on school grounds. The suspect, identified as Victor Hawkins, a 20-year-old former student, entered the building on April 7.

During the altercation, Moore was shot in the leg, but he was airlifted to a hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition. The footage shows someone opening the door for Hawkins, though it remains unclear if that person was a student or a staff member.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) stated that they do not believe this individual was cooperating with Hawkins. They also confirmed that no additional suspects were involved in the event.

The incident unfolded around 2:21 p.m., prompting a lockdown that lasted until police secured the scene. Moore and other staff members managed to subdue Hawkins until law enforcement arrived.

According to court documents, Hawkins entered the school armed with two loaded semi-automatic handguns. He allegedly pointed a weapon at students, demanding that they get on the ground. Interestingly, when he aimed at one student, the gun malfunctioned and failed to fire.

As the situation escalated, Moore, upon hearing the gunfire, sprinted to the lobby. When Hawkins shot at him, he was hit in the leg. A struggle ensued between them on a porch bench where Moore successfully wrested the handgun from Hawkins’ grip.

Following his arrest, Hawkins faced several charges, including firing with intent to kill, bringing a weapon to a public gathering, and pointing a firearm as a felon. The authorities noted that he had researched the Columbine shooting and had intended to emulate it at his school.

In the aftermath, OSBI commended the swift actions of Principal Moore and the school staff, suggesting their intervention potentially saved lives. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly situations can escalate and the crucial role individuals can play in preventing tragedies.
