Eric Swalwell, a former U.S. Representative from California, once earned the title of the “Congressional King of Snapchat,” but his career took a downward turn as new allegations of sexual misconduct came to light.
After facing multiple accusations of sexual harassment and assault, Swalwell stepped down from his congressional role and paused his campaign for governor of California. In his statement, he firmly denied the criminal accusations but acknowledged that he had engaged in inappropriate conduct outside of his marriage in the past.
Allegations against Swalwell include claims that he sent unsolicited explicit photos to women he met through professional channels on Snapchat, a platform known for its ephemeral messages.
Back in 2016, he was celebrated for his innovative use of Snapchat, a platform not widely adopted by politicians then. Technology journalist Taylor Lorenz highlighted his success in The Hill, describing how Swalwell effectively connected with voters, portraying a more personal side of his daily life through short videos and images shared on the app.
In an old interview, Swalwell mentioned that Snapchat appealed to a broad audience, not just young users. He noted the platform’s potential for direct voter engagement, remarking that people recognized him in public places, mentioning they enjoyed his Snapchat posts.
However, recent reports detail serious allegations that may impact Swalwell’s career beyond politics. Lorenz, reflecting on her previous coverage, expressed horror at the new developments, describing the situation as deeply disturbing, particularly given Swalwell’s position of power.
As of now, Swalwell’s office has not provided any comments on these unfolding events.
